Physical Beating Heart Model
An electric hydraulic pump perfused this plastic model rhythmically
within a closed circuit waterbath.
At several locations artificial stenoses are visible as red plastic
inserts within the translucent tubes.
By design the central balloon expanded with every beat and caused about
10 percent change of the
distance between the tubes. The system was controlled by a computer
that directed the data acquisition
(single lead "EKG" and 2 X-ray video cameras) as well as the timing of
the dye injection. The beat rate
("HR") was random between 60 and 62 BPM (electric blinker relay, powered
by battery charger).
